It is a most sacred city for buddhists with numerous temples and shrines, based on buddhist architecture. Kandy was declared as a unesco world heritage site in 1988 and thus became a tourism hub.

Nuwara eliya is famous among tourists as the hill resort of sri lanka. Nuwara eliya, located at around 2000m above sea level, can be reached by travelling about 180 km from colombo. This travel destination is favoured by travellers as it is surrounded by lush tea plantations overlooked by pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in sri lanka.
